Around 80 members and guests celebrated our national bard’s anniversary on Saturday evening, January 26. It was much enjoyed by all and the ‘traditional’ veggi-haggis meal was served.
The event was held at the shul’s social hall and started off with our own Scottish bagpiper, Ricky Zinger, piping in the Haggis. Our host for the evening was Eileen Carroll, who warmly welcomed the guests and introduced Fiona Brodie who gave the “Address to the Fress” (by the late Avrom Greenbaum). She was followed by Julian Feuchtwang, who recited “The Selkirk Grace” (before the fress/meal), after which the starters (hors d’oeuvres) were served. Michael Carroll then asked all to raise their glasses while he recited the “Toast to the Haggis”, after which a sumptuous meal was served.
The “Immortal Memory” (of Robert Burns) was commemorated by Richard Townsend (GRS co-chair) and Howard Brodie, who sang some of Robert Burns’ songs. Before dessert Michael Carroll then recited and acted out the “Tam O’Shanter” poem with explanations, and Steven Anson asked everyone to once again raise their glasses as he gave his toast to “The Lassies”, to which Eileen Carroll replied on behalf of all the ladies/lassies present.
Finally, we all danced the night away to our Ceilidh master Wilson and his accordion. It was a great and fun evening and everyone had a wonderful time. Many compliments have been received on this year’s annual event.
