Last Saturday at GRS began with the annual Holocaust Memorial Day Civic Service, followed by a special kiddush. The congregation was joined by a large number of invited guests, including Saskia Tepe, who had been one of the keynote speakers at the National Scottish HMD commemoration at Bishopriggs earlier in the week. The service was led by Eileen Carroll and other members of the congregation, with a keynote address given by GRS member Madeleine Black, who spoke movingly on the theme “How Can Life Go On?”, sharing the story of her father Leo Geddy’s experiences of persecution during the Nazi period until he found sanctuary and built a new life in the UK.
During the kiddush a collection of survivors’ portraits in monotype created by the GRS Cheder pupils was on display, and can be viewed here.
